Welcome to our intimate Elephant Camp nestled in the Mae Wang region near Chiang Mai. Hailing from the White Karen hill-tribe, we have a rich history of coexisting with elephants in our villages for thousands of years.
In contemporary times, the traditional use of elephants by villagers for jungle activities and agriculture has dwindled, resulting in a decline in the elephant population in our forests. At Thong Elephant Sanctuary, our mission is to rescue and provide a sanctuary for these magnificent creatures, offering them a safe haven to live freely.
Discover more about Thailand’s elephants here. Our camp proudly stands as an eco-tourism and sustainable project, dedicated to preserving the well-being of these incredible animals.
Small & non touristy elephant sanctuary
We refrain from allowing people to ride our elephants for a crucial reason – the anatomy of an elephant’s spine differs significantly from that of horses. The structure of their spines cannot bear any weight from above, making riding detrimental and causing long-term harm to these majestic creatures. Our elephants hold a special place in our hearts as cherished members of our family, and we prioritize their well-being over any commercial activities.
At our small family camp, we believe in fostering a connection with our elephants through discovery and shared experiences rather than riding. We limit our group size to about 20 people per day to ensure an intimate and personalized encounter. Our approach stands in stark contrast to the larger elephant camps prevalent in Chiang Mai, where buses of tourists are a daily occurrence. We strive to offer a unique and meaningful experience that goes beyond the typical tourist attractions.
No chains, no hook, no riding, but so much fun and feelings 🙂
